The lands that comprise the Municipality of Alfredo Chaves, up until the date of its emancipation, belonged to the Municipality of Benevente, now Anchieta.
The first colonizers of the region, ascending the Benevente River, founded in the location of the Municipal Seat, the village of Alto do Benevente, which later received the names of Población de Cachoeira de Benevente and finally Alfredo Chaves, in homage to Minister Alfredo Rodrigues Fernandes Chaves, who is credited with the arrival of the first Tyrolean colonizers.
In 1878 and 1895, new groups of Italian immigrants settled in the region, completing the immigration cycle observed in the Municipality.

District created under the name Alfredo Chaves, by state decree of 24-01-1891 and state law n° 1220, of 31-12-1919. Subordinated to the municipality of Anchieta.
Elevated to the category of village under the name of Alfredo Chaves, by state decree of 24-01-1891, dismembered from Anchieta, Seat in the village of Alfredo Chaves. Constituted of the district seat. Installed on 24-01-1891.
In the administrative division referred to the year 1911, the municipality is constituted of 4 districts: Alfredo Chaves, Matilde, Rio Quatinga, and São João.
In the census tables of General Enumeration of 1-09-1920, the municipality is constituted of 5 districts: Alfredo Chaves, Matilde, Santa Marinha de Airosa, São João, and São Marcos, not showing the Rio Quatinga district.
In administrative division referring to the year 1933, the municipality is constituted of 6 districts: Alfredo de Chaves, Matilde, Santa Marinha de Airosa, São João, and São Marcos.
Thus remaining in territorial divisions dated 31-12-1936 and 31-12-1937.
By state decree n° 9941, of 11-11-1938, the district of Santa Marinha de Airosa was extinguished, and its territory was annexed to the seat district of the municipality of Alfredo Chaves.
In the framework established to be in force for the period 1939-1943, the municipality consists of 4 districts: Alfredo Chaves, Matilde, São João, and São Marcos.
By state law decree n° 15.177, of 31-12-1943, it acquired the district of Sagrada Família from the municipality of Guarapari. Under the same decree, the district of São João began to be called Crubixá, and the district of São Marcos was extinguished, with its territory annexed to the municipality of Alfredo Chaves.
In the framework fixed to be in force for the period 1944-1948, the municipality consists of 4 districts: Alfredo Chaves, Crubixá, Matilde, and Sagrada Família.
In the territorial division dated 1-07-1955, the municipality is constituted of 4 districts: Alfredo Chaves, Crubixá, Matilde, and Sagrada Família.
Thus remaining in territorial division dated 1-07-1960.
By state law n° 1926, of 07-01-1964, the districts of Ribeirão do Cristo and Urânia were created and annexed to the municipality of Alfredo Chaves.
By state law n° 1930, of 07-01-1964, the district of Ibitiruí was created and annexed to the municipality of Alfredo Chaves.
In the territorial division dated 1-01-1979, the municipality is constituted of 7 districts: Alfredo Chaves, Crubixá, Ibitiruí, Matilde, Ribeirão do Cristo, Sagrada Família, and Urânia.
Thus remaining in territorial division dated 14-05-2001.
